Crowns and Bridges – What’s the Difference?
Dental crowns are used to cover, or ‘cap’, the whole of the visible part of a tooth. They have a variety of uses, including:
- Protecting a tooth that is chipped or cracked
- Adding support to a weakened tooth, particularly after a root canal
- Strengthening a tooth that has lost much of its structure due to a large filling, or
- Topping a dental implant
Dental bridges, on the other hand, are used to close gaps where one or more teeth are missing. To make dental bridges, one or more crowns are used to replace the missing teeth. These are fused together to form the ‘bridge’. The teeth at either end of the gap are then ‘crowned’ and used to hold the bridge in place.
Types of Dental Crowns
Our dental crowns are skilfully designed to ensure they fit accurately and comfortably. Traditional dental crowns are made from full porcelain, full metal, or metal fused to porcelain. These procedures require at least two appointments to complete, including preparation and fitting. Our dentist will discuss your options and help you choose the material that’s best suited to your individual needs.
In addition we also offer same-day CEREC crowns, Our patients can benefit from high-quality, natural-looking and durable crowns that are measured, designed and manufactured at our clinic while you wait.
CEREC (or Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) are created using modern digital dentistry technology.
During the process a digital camera is used to take an image of your teeth. This is then uploaded to a design unit. The unit incorporates the latest CAD/CAM software which helps the dentist to create a 3D model of the new restoration.
Then when everything is good to go, your new crown is milled, from a single colour-matched block of high quality ceramic.
