Emergency dentistry – What You Can Expect

Our main aim as emergency dentists is to get you out of pain or discomfort as quickly as possible through emergency dental treatment, where necessary. We know that speedy treatment is vital with dental emergency cases and we endeavour to get you treated fast.

At your emergency dental appointment, our dentist will listen to your problem and carry out a thorough dental examination. They may also need to take dental x-rays to discover the extent of your dental emergency. Next, your dentist will explain your treatment options, provide you with a quote for the various options, and prescribe medication and/or painkillers to help you during the interim period.

When it comes to emergency dentistry, not all treatments can be completed in one dental visit. However, you can rest assured that we will never leave you in pain or discomfort.

What Constitutes a Dental Emergency?

In essence, a dental emergency is anything that is potentially life-threatening or that requires immediate attention to alleviate severe pain and or risk of infection. With this in mind, some of the reasons to call an emergency dentist include:

  • Severe toothache or dental pain from pulpal inflammation or pericoronitis (wisdom tooth infection)
  • Dry socket after a tooth extraction
  • Prolonged facial swelling
  • A damaged or fractured tooth
  • A knocked out (avulsed) tooth
  • Severe or prolonged bleeding from the mouth
  • Trauma involving facial bones with the potential to block an airway
  • Intra or extra-oral swelling making it difficult to breath
  • Broken tooth, crown or denture causing severe gingival (gum) irritation

How to prevent a visit to an emergency dentist

While accidents are unavoidable, there are a few steps that you can take to avoid a trip to our emergency dentist.

For example, be sure to wear a custom mouthguard when playing contact sports. Did you know that 40% of all dental accidents we see are sporting-related?

Another way to prevent emergency dental visits is to attend your regular 6 monthly check-ups. In doing so, our dentists can diagnose any dental problems early and treat them before they escalate.
