If you have stained teeth, gaps between your teeth, or teeth that are worn down by grinding, dental veneers are an excellent way to restore your natural, straight smile. Porcelain veneers are a less expensive way to straighten crooked teeth than braces, and they can last you for many years. How long do veneers last? With proper oral hygiene and care, your porcelain veneers can last for 10-15 years.
What are Dental Veneers?
Dental veneers are ultra-thin shells custom-designed to fit over the front surface of your tooth. Dental veneers are used to correct a variety of common patient complaints, including discoloured teeth, crooked or gapped teeth, cracking and chips, irregularly shaped teeth, and teeth worn down by bruxism, or teeth grinding.
You can choose from composite veneers, traditional lab veneers, or CEREC same-day veneers. With CEREC same-day, you can go home with a brand-new smile in less time.
While composite veneers are less expensive than porcelain veneers, they only last from 4 to 8 years.
How Long do Veneers Last?: Hygiene and Care
There are several ways you can help keep your composite or porcelain veneers looking great for many years to come. These include:
- Regular brushing and flossing
- Wearing a mouthguard at night and while playing sports
- Avoiding tobacco, red wine, dark colas, and other staining foods and drinks
- Attending check-ups with your dentist every six months
- Avoiding nail biting
- Do not open things with your teeth, including shrink wrap, shellfish shells, packing tape and other items
Cosmetic Dentistry: Getting Veneers
Veneers are considered part of cosmetic dentistry. In order to restore your straight smile, we custom-mould your veneers to your mouth and teeth so you can feel and look great.
During your first appointment, we examine your teeth and determine which areas would benefit most from veneers. We also discuss your budget and goals for how you want your smile to look. If you choose CEREC same-day dental veneers, we use 3D digital scans to craft your porcelain veneers and send these designs to our CEREC milling machine. This machine is on-site, so there’s no waiting for your veneers to be sent back from a dental lab. We place your veneers on the same day as your appointment.
Before placing the veneers, we prepare your teeth by removing a thin layer of enamel so that they will fit in your mouth. If you are receiving composite or traditional lab veneers, we take a mould or impression of your teeth and send them to the dental lab. We place temporary veneers until your next appointment.
When you return to our practice, we fit the veneers onto your teeth and ensure they meet your expectations. We also check your bite, so they feel comfortable. Once you are satisfied with your new veneers’ look and feel, we cement them into place.
