What is a dental veneer?

A dental veneer is a wafer-thin, custom-made, tooth-coloured shell that is either made of resin composite or high strength lab manufactured porcelain. Veneers are designed to cover the front surface of the teeth to improve appearance. The shells are bonded to the front of the teeth in order to change their colour, length, size or shape. They have the ability to change the colour, shape and alignment of teeth on which they are placed.

Why choose dental veneers?

Many people choose to invest in dental veneers if they are not happy with the appearance of their smile. They might be perfect for people who have:

  • Teeth which are discoloured from root canal treatment, stains, or the presence of large resin fillings.
  • Teeth which are worn, chipped or broken.
  • Teeth which are misaligned, uneven or irregularly shaped.
  • Gaps between the teeth.

Procedure for dental veneers

Getting dental veneers usually requires about three trips to the dentist.

Consultation and planning

This first step involves discussing your goals for the procedure. The dentist will examine your teeth to make sure the treatment is appropriate for you. You’ll have x-rays done and impressions are taken of your mouth and teeth.

One of our dentists will prepare your tooth/teeth for a veneer by preparing the surface of the enamel to make room for the veneer. The dentist will then make a model of the tooth to send to the lab and individually construct each veneer. This process usually takes about 2 to 4 weeks.

Once the veneer has been fitted and you are happy with its size, shape and colour, your tooth will be cleaned, polished and etched. The dentist will apply special cement to the veneer and place it on the tooth, using a special light to activate the cement chemicals, causing it to harden and cure quickly. After this, it’s just a matter of cleaning up the excess cement, evaluating the bite and making small adjustments as necessary.

How many dental visits are required?

Porcelain veneers and dental crowns can usually be completed in 2 or 3 dental visits. During the first visit the teeth are prepared and provisional veneers/crowns are placed. These provisional restorations are made to the patient’s specifications, and act to cover the prepared teeth while the permanent veneers/crowns are made. The patient therefore leaves their first appointment with a beautiful new smile.

Who is a candidate for Porcelain Veneers and Dental Crowns?

Virtually anyone wanting to change the appearance of their teeth can benefit from porcelain veneers and crowns. Porcelain veneers and crowns can correct:

  • Crooked or misaligned teeth
  • Crowded teeth
  • Chipped or worn teeth
  • Diastemas (spaces between the teeth)
  • Permanently stained or discoloured teeth

Porcelain veneers and dental crowns can, in many cases be used as an alternative to orthodontic treatment.

Porcelain veneers and dental crowns are not a good choice for individuals who:

  • have unhealthy teeth, e.g. those with excessive decay
  • have unhealthy gums, e.g. active periodontal disease
  • have severe malocclusions best treated with orthodontics
  • are under 18 years of age
